“you know how dissimilar images of the world can be”is a collaboration with youths from the entry class at Hersleb High School in Oslo, Tenthaus Oslo and the artist Anne-Liis Kogan.
The performance at Hersleb High School takes as its focusthe cultural heritage carried by each of the pupils in the participating-class. As a starting pointthe various skills each of them have came to the fore, together with the many different languages the pupils are familiar with.
The project has consisted in various workshop-based meetings. Through conversations, artist-try-outs and investigations in sound and video, they have achieved distinct results. The pupils refined their work process through their own current interests such as song, soccer, skipping-rope, writing and poetry.
Anne-Liis Kogan’s practice circles issues connected to national identity and belonging. She is interested in the personal and subjective, screened through both political and social contexts. Kogan researches how one, as a human being, translates one’s identity from a geographic location to another through symbols of longing, fantasies and feelings.
Other artists who have been invited to participate and contribute are: choreographer Guro Erika Gjerstadberget, where her guest-work developed a choreographytogether with the pupils. Oud-musician Shble Mazid Saleem composed music for the presentation. His point of departure were the frescoes which are permanently installed at the Hersleb High School.
The architecture of the school building became an important part of the project. The school was built in 1922 in a neoclassical style and drafted by the Norwegian architect Harald Aars. The building is considered worthy of conservation as a carrier of historic value and is found on the “yellow list”of the Byantikvariat (the Oslo city planning authorities). In 1927 Consul general Peter Krag gave the “fresco-brothers” Alf Rolfsen, Per Krohg og Axel Revold the assignment to decorate the Hersleb school. As thematic motives the three artists chose different school subjects: Alf Rolfsen chose History, Per Krogh Nature, and Axel Revold Geography. These wall-paintings serves the project as a visual backdrop from Norwegian history. It is also the node from which Kogan’s work has departed to search out connecting lines between the frescoes and the youths..
